Cause for alarm

OU and a family friend deny broadcaster’s claim that Austin Box’s death was ‘suicide.’

News

Rob Collins
Former University of Oklahoma star and national broadcaster Spencer Tillman characterized Austin Box’s tragic death as a “suicide” this week on a Houston sports talk radio station, despite the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s ruling that the death was accidental.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Spins a web, familiar size.

Action

Rod Lott
I still don’t know why Hollywood felt that Spider-Man, all of 10 years young, needed to be remade — I suspect it has to do with selling toys. Enough of calling The Amazing Spider-Man a “reboot,” too; this is a remake through and through.

Why Stop Now

Don’t even start.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Why Stop Now is a comedy that tries too hard to be a comedy. C’mon, you know the kind: Although grounded in reality, the film presents characters so quirky, they may as well come with signs around their neck to signal their stock roles, i.e. “Precocious Sibling” and “Black Sidekick.” Incidentally, this one fronts both of those examples.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

High school was tough.

Drama

Phil Bacharach
John Hughes, for all the love people heap on his ’80s teen movies, was far too easy on high school. Maybe your high school experience was different than mine — and, if so, congrats. For many of us, however, those years were a marathon of self-pity, heartache, passion and anything else you’d find on an album by The Smiths.

The Collection

Gotta catch ’em all!

Horror

Rod Lott
What began as an intended Saw prequel has spawned a franchise of its own, now that 2009’s The Collector has begat The Collection. I hope in my heart of hearts that The Collection begets a third chapter — The Collective, perhaps?

Gangster Squad

Speaking ‘Confidential’ly ...

Action

Rod Lott
Gangster Squad takes place in 1949 Los Angeles, a time when the Hollywood sign still sported “LAND” at the end, and a time that looks like L.A. Confidentiala lot like L.A. Confidential.

This Is the End

If only that were true ...

Comedy

Louis Fowler
To me, few things are as annoying as being stuck in a conversation with a group of stoners who’ve spent most of the day tokin’ it up.

This Is the End

If only that were true.

Comedy

Louis Fowler
This Is the End is the cinematic equivalent of being stuck in a living room with a group of High Times subscribers who have plenty of money to burn and plenty of fart jokes to release. Yes, there is a twist to it all, but it seems more like an afterthought than an actual plot point.

Saving Mr. Banks

Making Disney's Mary Poppins was anything but merry, as this winner shows.

Drama

Rod Lott
If there's one thing Hollywood loves more than itself, it's stories about itself. From The Artist to Argo, these films have translated into Tinseltown's ultimate display of self-affection: Oscar gold.
