Jolene

A good movie with an astounding lead performance

Drama

Rod Lott
You should see "Jolene," not because it's an excellent movie (which it isn't) or because it breaks new ground (which it doesn't).

‘Rum’ punchless

A tame Johnny Depp and disheveled script leave ‘The Rum Diary’ with a nasty hangover.

Drama

Matt Carney
Written by Hunter S. Thompson at 24, but unpublished until his early 60s, “The Rum Diary” was a fictionalized account of his besotted time in Puerto Rico, what in reality was a nine-month stint between gigs as a New York City journalist.

Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie

Great job!

Comedy

Rod Lott
When a movie's opening-credits logos are funny, you're in for quite a trip. Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie is indeed a trip — an acid one, to be precise. Whether it's good or bad depends entirely on your acceptance of ... oh, to pick a scene at random, a character held against his will in a bathtub being filled with the diarrhea of four children.

21 Jump Street

For a good time, 'Jump' on it.

Comedy

Rod Lott
To enjoy 21 Jump Street, one need not have been a fan of the 1987-91 Fox TV series of the same name. You might even enjoy the film more if you hated the show, notable only for making Johnny Depp a star. While not an outright parody per se, the action comedy does poke fun at how ridiculous the series' premise was.

Dark Shadows

The vampire comedy doesn't suck.

Comedy

Rod Lott
One of this summer's biggest bombs, Dark Shadows is only a disappointment if you expect a straight take on the 1960s Gothic soap opera. Then again, the TV series is such the definition of niche-cult that most moviegoers didn't know what to make of it. While I would have preferred to see Tim Burton go horror with the material — more Sleepy Hollow, less Beetlejuice — I still found the quasi-spoof comedy to be a mild delight.
