A Necessary Death

Suicide isn’t painless.

Drama

Rod Lott
Gilbert Toma had an original, envelope-pushing idea for his film school thesis project: Document the final days of someone who has decided to end his or her life, including the actual act of suicide. One Craigslist ad seeking such a subject later, 142 tapes were shot, and the end result is A Necessary Death.

Django, Kill! (If You Live Shoot!)

Viewer, watch!

Western

Rod Lott
Is there a title more intriguing yet baffling than the punctuation-heavy Django, Kill! (If You Live Shoot!)? Don't answer that. The important thing is just that the 1967 Italian cult favorite now has been unleashed uncensored on Blu-ray from Blue Underground.

Looper

It's a real time killer.

Science Fiction

Phil Bacharach
Hurray for movies with ideas. In Looper, writer-director Rian Johnson crams in so many, it initially looks as if this sci-fi actioner might collapse under the weight of them all. Dystopian society, time travel, telekinesis, gangland killings — there are a lot of ground rules to keep track of here, much of them conveyed through the wobbly device of a narrator.

Maximum Conviction

And minimal competence.

Action

Rod Lott
In Maximum Conviction, Steve Austin forever speaks like there’s a pinch of Skoal eating through the corner of his bottom lip, but I have no idea what’s going on with Steven Seagal’s accent attempt: Southern? Cajun? Ebonics? An overly phlegmy head cold? Your guess is as good as mine, and unfortunately, I’ve seen the movie.

Kill ’Em All

Morrrrrtal combatttttt!

Action

Rod Lott
For the first 10 minutes, I wondered if Kill ’Em All weren’t a movie at all, but a collection of unrelated action vignettes — a bomb hit here, a knife throw there, fists and feet everywhere — as seemingly unrelated characters fight, but hardly speak, with no story given.
