Until now, I had never seen the 1980 horror film Mother's Day, but its poster art has stayed top-of-mind when I first stumbled upon the VHS box in the early '80s, when the Sound Warehouse at Northwest Expressway and Rockwell Avenue — may it rest in peace — started renting movies in addition to keepin' the metro rockin' with a wide selection of LPs and cassettes.

When Tom Folsom terms his new nonfiction work, Hopper, as “a rebel biography,” he’s not kidding. Not only is his subject a rebel, but so is his approach. A you-are-there POV, fonts that interrupt the narrative — you’ve never read a celebrity bio quite like it, and that’s certainly befitting of its star.

While it's not entirely successful, The Town That Dreaded Sundown represents a big step up for Charles B. Pierce, the Arkansas filmmaker who made a cinematic cryptozoological splash in 1972's unlikely hit The Legend of Boggy Creek.
