The Ghostmaker

Give it a ‘Ghost’ of a chance.

Horror

Rod Lott
While cleaning a widow’s basement, college student Kyle (Aaron Dean Eisenberg) finds a dusty coffin. Smelling a big eBay sale, he takes it home to clean it up and finds that’s it no ordinary box for bones, but a padded that conceals an intricate system of gears and a built-in music box, not to mention a key dated 1452.

The Possession

This is why you shouldn’t go antiquing.

Horror

Rod Lott
Certainly I’m not the only one who confused The Possession and The Apparition when they played theaters late this summer. After all, the two horror films not only had soundalike titles and shared similar premises, but opened within seven days of one another.

Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis

The one-time ‘Nutty Professor’ just wants to be loved. Is that so wrong? Well, now that you mentioned it ...

Documentary

Rod Lott
There's a long-standing joke about Jerry Lewis being loved by the French, and to paraphrase The Simpsons, it’s funny ’cuz it’s true. We even see the adulation — then, now — in Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis, a two-hour documentary about the man whom one celebrity admirer calls “The Beatles of movie comedy.”

How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life

And ogle Stella Stevens in the process.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Coming at the tail end of Hollywood’s innocence, 1968’s How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life is one of those old-school romantic comedies that indulges in such outdated notions that a woman’s place is in the home.

13 Eerie

Zombies declare war on science.

Horror

Rod Lott
When viewers insert the DVD of 13 Eerie into their player, and the menu loads, they’ll be greeted by a crude but cute animation of the cover’s creature doing a little jig. I don’t think it’s meant to be amusing as I took it, but it is a sign that the movie isn’t your average, ordinary zombie film.

Hopper: A Journey into the American Dream — Tom Folsom

Nonfiction

Rod Lott
When Tom Folsom terms his new nonfiction work, Hopper, as “a rebel biography,” he’s not kidding. Not only is his subject a rebel, but so is his approach. A you-are-there POV, fonts that interrupt the narrative — you’ve never read a celebrity bio quite like it, and that’s certainly befitting of its star.

RED 2

Better dead than ‘RED.’

Action

Zach Hale
Nobody in their right mind would mistake 2010's RED for high art. The film was a harmless, mildly entertaining caricature of a summer blockbuster that provided a fair amount of laughs and a hefty amount of explosions. Any notion of plot played second fiddle to graphic absurdity, but it at least bumbled about with a little bit of charm and charisma.

The Fog

For a great ghost story, bank on it.

Horror

Rod Lott
Once considered a disappointment (because anything after Halloween unfairly would be), John Carpenter's The Fog today is a genre-audience favorite — well-admired if just shy of qualifying as a modern horror classic. Its Blu-ray debut from Shout! Factory cements that.
