All my extended family lives out of state, so we usually meet at my grandparents’ house in Missouri for the holidays. So close to Kansas City, Mo., Boulevard brews are aplenty, as are St. Louis’s Schlafly (they have a September- October-only pumpkin ale that literally tastes like you’re drinking a spiced pumpkin pie still glowing from the oven), but this year I’ll bring a handful of my favorite Okie beers to share with the cousins, aunts and uncles.

The word “flexitarian” probably first appeared in Dawn Jackson Blatner’s 2008 book, The Flexitarian Diet. The idea was simple: Substitute a few meals each week with vegetarian-only entrées. Among the happy side effects Blatner listed were improved heart health, weight loss and a healthier planet.

What needs work: Open daily 7 a.m.-2 p.m. is good, but serving 24/7 would be amazing.

The tip: Sub cashew cheese for actual cheese if you're looking to cut dairy.
