Is it any wonder that Oklahoma students rank near the bottom of the country in math and science scores? Consider U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, who teaches them by example that if someone pays you enough money, you too can ignore the evidence and act like a fool.

Tom Furlong (Letters, “Why not move already?,” Oct. 24, Oklahoma Gazette) writes, “To think humans could alter the climate is hubris at its most significant.” Really? Humans have vastly increased levels of the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It would be the height of hubris to think that increasing levels of greenhouse gases would fail to result in greenhouse warming as physics demands.

Not to discount Mickey McVay’s environmental education, but his “Kool-Aid’s global warming flavor” letter (Oct. 24, Oklahoma Gazette) has left a bad taste in my mouth. Reason being, he has previously identified himself in letters to the editor as having been an “oily,” as in one who works in the oil industry.

While it is certainly nice to see someone invoke actual science in the discussion of climate change, much of what Mike Brake wrote (Letters, “Rational on climate change,” Oct. 17, Oklahoma Gazette) deserves further scrutiny. In short, discussions of the Medieval Warm Period (which was a regional, not global, phenomenon), solar variations and Milankovitch cycles are merely red herrings used to deflect focus from the uncomfortable, yet undeniable, evidence supporting anthropogenic climate-forcing.

Science homework might be a little easier for Oklahoma students in the near future, depending on how you look at it. House Bill 1674 by Rep. Gus Blackwell, R-Laverne, would allow students to turn in schoolwork that challenges “controversial topics” such as “biological evolution, the chemical origins of life, global warming and human cloning” without adverse consequences, such as a pesky bad grade. It also will force teachers to come up with more creative ways of handling such subjects.
