“Hobo with a Shotgun” started as a joke — specifically, as the winner of a fake trailer contest to promote the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez collaboration “Grindhouse.” For some reason, it follows “Machete,” the first faux coming attraction in “Grindhouse,” to a full-fledged feature.

In general, I prefer the films of Guillermo del Toro that he doesn’t direct (“The Orphanage,” “Splice”) to the ones he does (particularly “Hellboy” and its sequel). That pretty much holds true for “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” which he only co-wrote and co-produced, ceding the director’s chair to newcomer Troy Nixey.

So good are its recent Dario Argento reissues in high-definition that I'd been waiting patiently for Blue Underground's Blu-ray release of "Torso," a 1973 giallo from director Sergio Martino ("The Mountain of the Cannibal God"). Not only did it not disappoint, but it surpassed my expectations.

One of the many joys of “Grindhouse” was Edgar Wright’s fake trailer for “Don’t,” which  hilariously poked fun at the thrillers and frighteners of the 1970s whose titles warned viewers not to go somewhere or do something: “Don’t Open Till Christmas,” “Don’t Go in the Basement,” “Don’t Look in the Attic,” etc.

Opening with "Grindhouse" soundalike music, "Nude Nuns with Big Guns" very much wants to be a down-and-dirty Robert Rodriguez take on the women-in-prison picture, but with a religious twist.

Since 2005, Synapse Films has helped keep the sticky-floored spirit of grindhouse cinema alive by issuing collections of coming attractions under the 42nd Street Forever banner. Interested parties can catch up on the half-dozen titles thus far on DVD (I have, minus the lone XXX-Treme one) or opt for the new Blu-ray Edition. It's essentially a "greatest hits" piece, culling 80 trailers from all previous volumes.

Even if it sported a bland title, I still would've wanted to see Zombie A-Hole, for the simple fact that it's writer/director/producer/editor/animator/etc. Dustin Mills' follow-up to 2010's The Puppet Monster Massacre, one of the more fun films the cult world has yet to embrace, because not enough of its residents have seen it. That's my theory, anyway.
