Topic: gun control

Careful where you point that

Letters to the Editor

Brandon Wertz
“Locked, loaded and legal” (News, Peter Wright, May 9, Oklahoma Gazette) sounds like a gun guy’s wet dream, but it may present more problems than solutions. Concealed carry offers no indication to criminals that they are in for a fight, and thus the public presumption is that open carry is a deterrent. But there is a caveat.

Open carry is an embarrassment

Commentary

Robin Meyers
For over a decade I wrote a regular column for this page, a second opinion on the dominant political and theological ethos of my beloved Oklahoma — where I was born, have raised three children, and continue to lead the same amazing church.

How many children must die?

Letters to the Editor

Richard Westmoreland
The headlines the morning of July 20 read: Aurora, Colo., 12 dead and at least 50 wounded. The reality is this is nothing new, and it’s going to happen again.

When guns don't help

Letters to the Editor

John R. Junger III
Please let me weigh in on the debate about the proper use of firearms in our society. Robert Morris’ assertion (Letters, “Guns and freedom,” Aug. 15, Oklahoma Gazette) that retired Lt. Colonel Richard Westmoreland (”How many children must die,” July 25) has not seriously considered the meaning of that oath is a little disrespectful.

Loving our guns to death

Commentary

Robin Meyers
The Oklahoma response to the latest mass shooting will be utterly predictable. Gun rights in this state are like an official religion with a canned liturgy: “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Guns don’t kill people; people kill people.”

God’s presence amid horror

Letters to the Editor

David Hull
Amid of the horror in Connecticut, many fellow Christians likely will want to take up the counterpoint to the media’s discussions about guns and other perceived conservative Christian stereotypical debasements. Please don’t take the bait.

Guns, guns, guns!

State Rep. Mark McCullough, R-Sapulpa, evidently trying to merge reality with the action movie playing in his head, had a flash of insight on the massacre at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

Beware a well-armed government

Letters to the Editor

Vance Armor
In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., massacre, progressives are emboldened by the prospect that public opinion may shift toward their policies favoring citizen disarmament. Robin Meyers’ op-ed in Oklahoma Gazette is a fine crystallization of sentiments held by those who favor a certain kind of disarmament policy — but not a general disarmament policy. Rev. Meyers laments “[a] gun-loving, gun-saturated, gun-worshipping culture.”

Bob Hanlin
Thank you for publishing Robin Meyers’ commentary (”Loving our guns to death,” Dec. 19, 2012, Oklahoma Gazette) on the gun debate.

Bills of goods

It’s that time of year again, when the mundane clashes with the ridiculous and adults become Very Serious People while wearing proverbial clown shoes.
