I saw “Phantom of the Opera” for the first time in Toronto at the historic Pantages Theatre, which was home to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous production for more than a decade.

It was the summer before sixth grade, and it was one of those memorable trips that was full of firsts: first big train ride; first time in a large, vibrant city (I’m not counting Detroit); first time seeing professional musical theater. I loved it.

My experience with ALW’s “Cats” wasn’t as spectacular, mostly because I was seated behind what I’m assuming was the Detroit chapter of the Giants Society of America. Seriously, all I saw were cats leaping into the wings.

But even if you’ve never so much as seen a glimpse of Joseph or his “Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” you’ve got to admit ALW can score one hell of a musical. And, lucky us, his music is coming to the University of Oklahoma.

Tickets are on sale now for a one-weekend-only showcase of “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.” The production is running April 14-17 at the Sharp Concert Hall inside OU’s Catlett Music Center.

This event mines the talent of OU’s creatives, with 30 vocalists, the university’s symphony orchestra, choirs and dancers. It’s all going to combine for a truly fantastic production. It will perform selections from ALW musicals like “Cats,” “Evita,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and more.
