Shallow pals

‘Friends with Benefits’ plays edgy, but ultimately opts for safe sex.

Comedy

Phil Bacharach
Here are a few tips for aspiring moviemakers: If you want to mock the clichés of romantic comedy, try not to fall prey to them yourself.

Cowboys & Aliens

No joke, pardner: ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ is pure popcorn entertainment.

Science Fiction

Phil Bacharach
“Cowboys & Aliens” sounds like one of those high-concept flicks for which you might expect the idea went no further than the jokey title. Think “Snakes on a Plane.”

Another Earth

Out of orbit.

Science Fiction

Phil Bacharach
You’ve got to admire the DIY ethic of “Another Earth.” Raw and grainy, it is steadfastly committed to its own smarts and vision — even if it ultimately falls short of its ambitions.

One Day

Drama

Phil Bacharach
“One Day” turns on a gimmick, chronicling the tumultuous, on-again/ off-again romance of two people by dropping in on them the same date — July 15 — each year. It’s a clever device, if not enough to disguise the fact that otherwise, this tearjerker is as old-fashioned as they come.

Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop

How bitter Coco tastes.

Documentary

Phil Bacharach
Last year’s debacle over “The Tonight Show” didn’t quite reach Shakespearean proportions, but you sure couldn’t tell it at the time. When Jay Leno left the hallowed television franchise for a stab at prime time, NBC gave the coveted late-night slot to Conan O’Brien, who had been patiently waiting in the late-late-night wings.

We Were Here

Documentary

Phil Bacharach
It would have been understandable had “We Were Here” veered into the maudlin. The documentary, which recounts how San Francisco’s gay community united in the 1980s to combat the AIDS epidemic, has its share of gut-wrenching stories. But the film is admirably no-frills.
