Oklahoma under siege

Letters to the Editor

Wanda Jo Stapleton
Henry concluded that “House Bill 2780 represents an unconstitutional attempt by the Oklahoma Legislature to insert government into the private lives and decisions of its citizens. State policymakers should never mandate that a citizen be forced to undergo any medical procedure against his or her will.

In the Land of Blood and Honey

Drama

Phil Bacharach
“In the Land of Blood and Honey” doesn’t skimp on wartime atrocities.

Seeking Justice

Just in the Nic of time.

Thriller

Rod Lott
With little exception (National Treasure, Kick-Ass, about one minute of Grindhouse), there’s no denying that Nicolas Cage has spent the better part of the past decade in a career slump. Witness such critically lambasted underperformers as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Season of the Witch, Bangkok Dangerous and, most recently, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Zoom In: Sex Apartments

A nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.

Thriller

Rod Lott
It's both a blessing and a shame that Zoom In: Sex Apartments carries such an exploitative title: a blessing because it may trick some horny guys into watching a better movie than they'd expect, and a shame because, well, Sex Apartments. (Hey, it could be worse: The original subtitle was Rape Apartments.)

When conservatives attack

CFN

Gazette staff

The Chapman Report

The women of 'The Chapman Report' are as uncomfortable talking about sex as they are having it.

Drama

Rod Lott
Judging by the 1962 portrayed by The Chapman Report, everybody smoked cigarettes, LPs of poetry readings were a hot commodity, and the female orgasm had yet to be invented. While this film from legendary old-Hollywood director George Cukor (My Fair Lady) was determined to be earnest and serious in its time, it's quite a hoot today.

Sweet Kill

Sick, sleazy, sublime.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Tab Hunter can't make it with chicks because ... well, insert your own joke about his private life here, but in 1973's Sweet Kill, aka The Arousers, it's because he has mommy issues that rank right up there with Norman Bates and Oedipus.

Mother's Day

Mama knows be(a)st.

Horror

Rod Lott
Until now, I had never seen the 1980 horror film Mother's Day, but its poster art has stayed top-of-mind when I first stumbled upon the VHS box in the early '80s, when the Sound Warehouse at Northwest Expressway and Rockwell Avenue — may it rest in peace — started renting movies in addition to keepin' the metro rockin' with a wide selection of LPs and cassettes.
