Enlist in ‘Captain America,’ the final and finest superhero adventure of a summer season flooded with them.

Features

Rod Lott
“Captain America: The First Avenger” is Marvel’s third — third! — superhero movie just this summer, following “Thor” and “X-Men: First Class,” so it would be reasonable to expect audiences to be burned out on men in tights.

Captain America

Star-spangled s**t.

Action

Rod Lott
Not long after “Batman” changed Hollywood in the summer of 1989, every studio wanted to have the next comics-based blockbuster. I remember visiting Penn Square Mall’s multiplex (as I did often back then) and seeing a poster for “Captain America.” The one-sheet was comprised of little more than a close-up of Cap’s iconic shield and a promise to arrive next summer.

Mutant Girls Squad

Yes, another story about teen girls with octopus arms.

Action

Rod Lott
If you thought the X-Men series could use schoolgirl uniforms and tools protruding from naughty bits, have the Sushi Typhoon guys got a movie for you! It's called Mutant Girls Squad and, being from Japan, is three times crazier than America would think to make, or have the guts.

The Dark Knight Rises

Christopher Nolan directs a fitting send-off to his Batman trilogy.

Action

Phil Bacharach
Due to the twisted savagery of a young man in a Colorado movie theater, The Dark Knight Rises will forever be a footnote in American history. Hopefully, that horrific massacre will not influence perceptions of this epic conclusion to writer-director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

Femme Fatales: The Complete Second Season

Refractory period over; ready to go again?

Television series

Rod Lott
Certainly the favorite TV show of pubescent boys nationwide whose parents have no idea what airs on Cinemax after they go to bed, Femme Fatales is an anthology series that puts women on top, both figuratively and literally. The better sex engages in better sex, all while pulling the wool — surgically enhanced and otherwise — over the eyes of stupid men.
