If Contagion were exported to Scotland — and injected with a dose of speculative fiction in customs — the result might make Perfect Sense. The film fails only to fit snugly into one genre, being a thriller, a romance and sci-fi, but sci-fi only in the sense that Children of Men and Never Let Me Go were. This is equally brainy, and maybe just a smidge less bleak.

Directed by Dante Lam (The Stool Pigeon), the action-thriller The Viral Factor revolves around the world’s last two surviving samples of the smallpox virus, one of which is an arm’s length away from being used to develop a biological weapon to unleash of five of the world’s seven continents.

Japan's Sadako 3D purports to be the final chapter of the Ringu films (remade as The Ring on these shores). If you believe this is truly the end, you're adorable in your gullibility. Even the movie's final moments contradict any semblance of closure.
