White water

Washington’s Columbia Valley moves away from some American styles to produce white wines with an Old World sense of restraint.

Food and Drink Features

Greg Horton
Reason No. 1 to shop the Washington section of your favorite wine shop is probably price. According to Wine Spectator magazine’s Augustus Weed, “Exploring Washington’s white wines can be easy on the wallet, with most of the bottlings … priced at $20 or less.”

The federal Titanic is sinking

Commentary

State Rep. T.W. Shannon
Ninety percent of an iceberg is typically underwater. This fact makes icebergs extremely dangerous, because it takes a keen eye to determine if the ice floating on the surface is a small block that can be pushed aside or several million tons of ice that will sink your ship.

Django Unchained

The 'D' is silent; the movie is not.

Western

Rod Lott
As he did with 2009’s Inglourious Basterds, superstar filmmaker Quentin Tarantino looked to Italy for primary inspiration for his follow-up. In Django Unchained, he’s cribbed the country’s spaghetti Western genre, shoehorned the all-American slavesploitation film into its center, and rewritten another ugly chapter in world history while filtering it all through his Movies Unlimited catalog lens.

Olympus Has Fallen

And it can't get up!

Action

Rod Lott
As Aaron Eckhart grows angry and Morgan Freeman pulls strings from the sidelines, a possibly crazy but altogether decent man dishes out some superheroic justice to save the city. The result is an excellent movie, arguably the best of the year.

Married with music

Despite having day jobs and nightly marital duties, OKC/D.C. duo Husbands overcome odds to craft blissful bedroom pop.

Music

Zach Hale

If it wasn’t for their name, you’d never know Husbands have wives and 9-to-5s. Peruse through the many singles on their Bandcamp website and the youthful exuberance with which their music brims becomes clear: Sunlit melody is often obscured by ominous cloud cover, only to burst through in a densely layered amalgam of reverb-laced guitar and soaring harmonies dubbed to the max.
