In a move Oklahoma City Public Schools officials and downtown business leaders hope changes the landscape of public education in the city, the school district entered into a memorandum of understanding with a nonprofit group to make the planned MAPS For Kids downtown elementary a charter school.

No matter what health statistic is considered, Oklahoma City generally does not fare very well. It has higher rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease than most of its peer cities. No doubt some of that can be attributed to personal decisions, but some of it is due to our built environment. We have built a city that, in most areas, makes travel by walking and cycling more difficult than driving a vehicle.
