The Slumber Party Massacre

Drill, baby, drill!

Horror

Rod Lott
According to The Slumber Party Massacre, young women love to have group sleepovers so fun that the girls don't have the good sense to leave the house when their party is crashed by the arrival of a drill-wielding serial killer.

Homefront

Home is where the Stath is.

Action

Rod Lott
From screenwriter Sylvester Stallone comes Homefront, at one time developed as a Rambo sequel, but somewhere along the way handed off as a vehicle for fellow Expendable Jason Statham.

Machine Head

Spring break is broken.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Once saddled with the unimaginative-but-accurate title of Spring Break Killer, the indie thriller Machine Head has several things going for it: actual direction, a location with built-in production value, a solid handle on ambience, a terrific soundtrack and it's not based on the intolerable, same-named Bush song, so omnipresent on FM radio in the mid-'90s.

In Fear

Fear itself.

Thriller

Rod Lott
In Fear is a British take on that hoary Hollywood premise of two 20-somethings menaced by a third. Although the film is largely improvised, viewers will notice only one new thing about it: The hipsters at its center are en route to a music festival. Had Anchor Bay Entertainment wished to exploit that fact for the Blu-ray release, it could have retitled the film Bonnarubes, Coach-hella or Glastonburied.

Beneath

Just when you thought it was safe ...

Horror

Rod Lott
Six newly graduated high schoolers get together for one last shebang, which goes sour. You've seen that before, but not from indie director Larry Fessenden.

Gravity

Space is the place.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Gravity is one of those rare films that truly is meant to be experienced on the big screen. If theaters were a thing of the past — and believe me, it's only a matter of time — it is doubtful it would have been made.

Return to Nuke 'Em High

Radiates bad taste.

Comedy

Rod Lott
At once a reboot of and a sequel to 1986's Class of Nuke 'Em High, the comedy Return to Nuke 'Em High: Volume 1 presents a premise as thin as a used Kleenex — radioactive tacos mutate high schoolers — in order for the Troma label to unleash its distinctive brand of rapid-fire, unrestrained lunacy designed to upset everyone. It's something else, all right — I'm just unsure what that “else” is.

Contracted

STD OMG!

Horror

Rod Lott
If David Cronenberg taught sex-ed classes, Contracted could be the film shown on the day they split the boys and girls among separate rooms. The IFC Midnight release's lesson: Always use protection. Especially if you're going to have a one-night stand with a necrophiliac.

Flu

Don't worry: It's not contagious.

Thriller

Rod Lott

In the near future — April, to be exact — a shipping container full of illegal immigrants — one of whom is sick — leaves Hong Kong and ends up in Seoul, Korea. So does the fatal virus the coughing guy carries, leading to a pandemic and eventual citywide quarantine.

Nurse 3D

Rx for boredom.

Horror

Rod Lott
Abigail Russell isn't your average nurse, because she's also a serial killer. Abigail Russell isn't your average serial killer, either, because she only wants to kill men who cheat. But come to think of it, that hardly narrows the field.
