Beautiful Creatures

More paranormal activity among teens with romance on their minds.

Drama

Rod Lott
I'm beginning to think that YA stands not for "young adult," but "yet another" — as in yet another book-based, supernatural-tinged teen romance to emerge in Twilight's wake. Beautiful Creatures is one of them. It's much better than Twilight, but hell, what's not?

Snitch

The Rock’s roll continues.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Now that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has had three back-to-back hits this season in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Pain & Gain and, of course, Fast & Furious 6, it's time to catch up with the one film of his this year audiences ignored: Snitch.

National Lampoon's Vacation: 30th Anniversary Edition

A comedy classic turns 30; moose outside shoulda told ya.

Comedy

Rod Lott
I found out long ago it's a long way down the Holiday Road — three decades, to be precise. I forever hold an extra-special affinity for 1983's National Lampoon's Vacation, not just because it's a modern comedy classic, but because it was the first R-rated movie I got to see in theaters; I was 12. (Thank you, Janice Haunschild, for convincing my mom she had nothing to worry about.)

Before Midnight

Make time for the brilliant, moving conclusion to Richard Linklater’s trilogy of tales of Jesse and Celine.

Drama

Phil Bacharach
In Before Midnight, the latest of director Richard Linklater’s odes to romance — a high-minded odyssey begun with Before Sunrise in 1995 and continued with Before Sunset in 2004 — there’s a sly bit that reflects the personal baggage fans of this trilogy bring to the multiplex.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

... and they kicked ass happily ever after.

Action

Rod Lott
A few surprising things about Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters:
• It comes from MTV Films,
• is produced by Will Ferrell,
• and is as fun as its title is dumb.

This Is the End

If only that were true ...

Comedy

Louis Fowler
To me, few things are as annoying as being stuck in a conversation with a group of stoners who’ve spent most of the day tokin’ it up.

Kanye West — Yeezus

The skills match the ego.

Hip Hop/Rap

Zach Hale
Try as you might, but there’s no escaping Kanye West. Turn on the TV, radio, computer — hell, take a stroll downtown and you might see his mug projected on the side of a building. It’s an undeniable fact of life in 2013: Kanye West is bigger than Buddha, Krishna and The Beatles (today, anyway) and he’ll be the first to let you know about it.

The Last Exorcism Part II

What possessed them?

Horror

Rod Lott
Unlike many moviegoers, 17-year-old farm girl Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell, The Day) has no memory of the events of The Last Exorcism, a found-footage smash of three years prior. The Last Exorcism Part II finds her taking steps to build life anew, beginning in a boarding house for troubled girls, where the deeply devout Nell is exposed to such heretofore corrupting influences as lipstick and rock music and YouTube and cotton candy.

The Monk

I vow that it’s a gem.

Thriller

Rod Lott
For several years, I’ve intended to read Matthew G. Lewis' 1796 novel, The Monk. I even bought a snazzy trade-paperback edition with an introduction from Stephen King. Never got around to cracking it open.

Terror on a Train

Choo-choo-choose something else.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Not to be confused with the ’80s slasher Terror Train — but, oh, how I wish it were! — 1952's Terror on a Train finds Glenn Ford (Superman: The Movie's Pa Kent) as Peter Lyncort, a bomb diffuser whose home life with his spouse (French actress Anne Vernon) is currently as explosive as his work life.
