I don’t watch a ton of TV shows while they’re airing. With a few exceptions, I wait for the DVD and/or Blu-ray sets so I can go on marathons — the only kind of marathons in which I’ll ever participate. Here are capsule reviews of seven such recent tubular trips.

Just because you don’t have Jason Bourne, Matt Damon or a Robert Ludlum novel to crib from doesn’t mean you can’t still wring some thrills out of the Bourne franchise. With the dog days of the summer box-office season comes The Bourne Legacy, a respectable spy actioner, even if it falls short of the standard set by its predecessors.

I can't believe — just. cannot. believe. — that Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory lost the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature this past spring. And to a football movie, no less! It's another case of the jocks running ragged over the outcasts, except these outcasts were able to effect something few docs achieve: change.

Sins and sons — those are the driving themes for the sixth season of Dexter, arguably the anchor of the Showtime cable network. Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall in his Golden Globe-winning role) is a Miami Metro PD forensics analyst who moonlights as a serial killer of serial killers.

When Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam film, Full Metal Jacket, hit theaters in the summer of 1987, I was all of 16 years old. Even I could tell it was far better than Oliver Stone’s Platoon, which by then had won four Academy Awards; by comparison, Jacket would be nominated for one, Best Adapted Screenplay, and lose it to The Last Emperor.

Even if this weren’t a big month for Jaws, what with a digitally restored re-release and Blu-ray debut, we’d likely still be inundated with shark movies.

Of the six films that compose the double-disc Weird-Noir set, exactly zero may qualify as truly weird. The adjective likely is applied just as a tie to its label, Something Weird Video. Whatever the case, I don't care. The point is, all six films are a blast, and I'm just happy to have them — weird, plain, odd, milquetoast, legitimate, what have you.

Peter Gabriel’s 1986 album, So, found the former Genesis vocalist at his commercial and critical peak. Now, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, it’s not only been reissued in a three-disc box set, but is the subject of the Classic Albums documentary series.
