The Grown Ups — Dark Hearts

Rock

Zach Hale
It's pretty clear that The Grown Ups know what good music sounds like. When the band ceases its emulation of good music and lets its creativity flow naturally, the Oklahoma City collective's new album, Dark Hearts, offers flashes of genuine talent.

The Hitt Boyz — AlphaCat

Rock

Zach Hale
Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way: The band is called The Hitt Boyz, whose latest release is an EP titled AlphaCat, and, yes, the artwork is kind of amazing.

Leaf Hands — Your Imagination

Indie

Louis Fowler
While listening to the opening track of Leaf Hands’ Your Imagination, it’s almost impossible to not stare at the cover art: a bleak, early-winter rural landscape wherein distant figures huddle together and feel a lo-fi sense of melancholy.

Tallows — Memory Marrow

Indie

Zach Hale
Expectations can be a real pain in the ass. With today’s digital release model, hype trains traverse the Internet at breakneck speeds, often before a proper album is released. One or two great songs can set the bar so extraordinarily high that it will never be attained, much less cleared.

Go Limp

Don’t let the name fool you; local punks Limp Wizurds write some seriously strong tunes.

Music

Joshua Boydston

You probably think of the Fred Durst-fronted, rap rock powerhouse Limp Bizkit when you hear the name of Oklahoma City punk outfit Limp Wizurdz.

It’s no accident.

Married with music

Despite having day jobs and nightly marital duties, OKC/D.C. duo Husbands overcome odds to craft blissful bedroom pop.

Music

Zach Hale

If it wasn’t for their name, you’d never know Husbands have wives and 9-to-5s. Peruse through the many singles on their Bandcamp website and the youthful exuberance with which their music brims becomes clear: Sunlit melody is often obscured by ominous cloud cover, only to burst through in a densely layered amalgam of reverb-laced guitar and soaring harmonies dubbed to the max.

Poolboy — Soda Kids

Rock

Zach Hale
The Oklahoma City metro has a thriving garage rock scene. With seasoned acts like Broncho and Copperheads carrying the modern-day torch, the way has been paved for a flock of gritty, young, guitar-centric acts. But nascent Norman trio Poolboy has a knack for riotous hooks that few of its contemporaries can boast.

Husbands - "Aikin"

Pop

Zach Hale
Nobody in their right mind would ever accuse Husbands of remaining stagnant.

Weak Knees - “IceBevo”

Indie

Joshua Boydston
Indie rock has been in a good place as of late. Not caring about being cool is the new cool, and a couple of dudes on guitar, bass and drums can make catchy, earworm songs without being armed to the gills with computer software and vintage synthesizers.
