Perry Mason Mysteries: The Original Warner Bros. Movies Collection

I was underwhelmed, your honor.

Thriller

Rod Lott
I should have listened to Ron Backer. In his new book, Mystery Movie Series of 1930s Hollywood, he more or less warns would-be audiences away from trying any of the early 1930s’ half-dozen movies based on Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason character.

Elvira’s Movie Macabre: Mega Movie Marathon

Like an old-school monster rally busting at the seams!

Horror

Rod Lott
“Paired” — ahem — thematically across six discs are 12 feature films hosted by Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark, on her Mega Movie Marathon. Far from the horror hostess’ only DVD in circulation, this collection offers tremendous value by compiling several previously released double features into one set.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXV

For the 25th time, we’ve got Movie Sign!

Television series

Rod Lott
A noticeable difference exists with Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXV from Shout! Factory’s previous sets: This one is comparatively light on extras. However, that’s hardly a knock against it, because the show itself is just too damned good on its own.

Femme Fatales: The Complete First Season

Babes, bullets and ... well, that about covers it.

Television series

Rod Lott
Femme Fatales is unlike any previous Skinemax Cinemax adult series in that the nudity, while plentiful, isn’t the reason for its being and, therefore, isn’t dreadfully boring like those others — yes, you, Emmanuelle in Space. If you harbor an equal love for pulp fiction and dangerous curves, the 13 episodes that make up the premiere season’s three-disc set should provide plenty of no-brain, all-bod entertainment.

Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis

The one-time ‘Nutty Professor’ just wants to be loved. Is that so wrong? Well, now that you mentioned it ...

Documentary

Rod Lott
There's a long-standing joke about Jerry Lewis being loved by the French, and to paraphrase The Simpsons, it’s funny ’cuz it’s true. We even see the adulation — then, now — in Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis, a two-hour documentary about the man whom one celebrity admirer calls “The Beatles of movie comedy.”

Philo Vance Murder Case Collection

Man, that’s a lot of vintage homicide.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Following a half-dozen Perry Mason movies into the Warner Archive store are the half-dozen Philo Vance films that make up his Murder Case Collection. While S.S. Van Dine’s “dilettante detective” is nowhere near as well-known today as Erle Stanley Gardner’s attorney-at-law, this is the better set by bounds.

The Tarzan Collection Starring Jock Mahoney and Mike Henry

Contract a case of jungle fever.

Action

Rod Lott
What an unwieldy title The Tarzan Collection Starring Jock Mahoney and Mike Henry is. Then again, so many actors have donned the loincloth of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ iconic lord of the jungle across nearly 100 movies and counting, so specificity is required. This particular five-flick, five-disc set from Warner Archive rounds up the entire turns of the two men mentioned in the title.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXVI

The short review: Buy it already.

Television series

Rod Lott
I think the best way to review a box set of Mystery Science Theater 3000 would be to list all the references made by and/or targets of the Satellite of Love crew in those episodes, to demonstrate their true depth and breadth.

But that’d also be the worst, because we’d be here all day.

Terminator Anthology

Get it before Skynet takes over.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Quoth the cyborg, “I’ll be back.” And he was. And now again, this time in the form of Terminator Anthology, Warner Home Video’s Blu-ray box set of the four franchise films to date. It could be argued that the movies stopped being good when James Cameron stopped directing them. After revisiting the quartet, I don't agree — I strongly agree.
