A Single Shot

A backwoods noir.

Thriller

Rod Lott
In the thriller A Single Shot, director David M. Rosenthal follows the path Sam Raimi set in the snow with 1998's A Simple Plan: one that leads blue-collar folk to misappropriated money and, ergo, evil deeds. File it under “When Bad Things Happen to Good Rednecks.”

Darkman

Who is Darkman? It's time you knew.

Action

Rod Lott
Prior to his Spider-Man trilogy, director Sam Raimi cut his superhero-movie teeth on 1990's Darkman, a character of his own creation. Although it's clearly not the most polished of his works, the summer sleeper plays even better as the years tick by. Look no further than Shout! Factory's colorful re-release on Blu-ray.

Belle

Belle is a rarity in the summer movie season — it's smart.

Drama

Phil Bacharach
Belle is set in the 18th century, but its themes of race and class feel thoroughly contemporary. Don’t be fooled by the prevalence of bodices and powdered wigs. Like the best costume dramas, Belle has resonance for modern-day audiences, especially in a nation with a rapidly growing biracial population and an ever-widening gulf between the very rich and everyone else.
