The Lowbrow Reader Reader

Deals a royal flush of smart humor.

Nonfiction

Rod Lott
Zines were the blogs of their day, but you could read them in the bathroom. In the early 1990s, I was heavily plugged into the zine culture, sending stamps and dollar bills away in exchange for these indie pubs. Soon, during a short period of boredom and unemployment, I started one of my own.

Seeking Justice

Just in the Nic of time.

Thriller

Rod Lott
With little exception (National Treasure, Kick-Ass, about one minute of Grindhouse), there’s no denying that Nicolas Cage has spent the better part of the past decade in a career slump. Witness such critically lambasted underperformers as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Season of the Witch, Bangkok Dangerous and, most recently, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

American Animal

If he were my roomie, I’d be on trial for murder now.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Here now, a list of things that the protagonist (antagonist?) of American Animal does over the course of the film:

Chesty Morgan's Bosom Buddies

You're in for a real t(r)eat.

Action

Rod Lott
Let's just state the obvious right, er, up front: Chesty Morgan has extremely large breasts. Unlike her name, they are God-given.

The Deep Blue Sea

Rachel Weisz commits the vice of adultery in a drama so pedestrian-paced, it makes sex look boring.

Drama

Rod Lott
Don’t confuse last year’s drama The Deep Blue Sea with Deep Blue Sea, the 1999 action movie about sharks. Based on a stage play, this is the one that could use some sharks.

Zoom In: Sex Apartments

A nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.

Thriller

Rod Lott
It's both a blessing and a shame that Zoom In: Sex Apartments carries such an exploitative title: a blessing because it may trick some horny guys into watching a better movie than they'd expect, and a shame because, well, Sex Apartments. (Hey, it could be worse: The original subtitle was Rape Apartments.)

Cherry Bomb

It's a real dud.

Action

Rod Lott
With the John Cougar Mellencamp song "Cherry Bomb," our hearts were really thumping. With the film Cherry Bomb, however, it barely registers a pulse.

Casa de Mi Padre

¡Grande! Assuming you can read.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Even if you hate it — and plenty will — you have to admit Casa de Mi Padre is a unique slice of cinema. Will Ferrell stars in this spirited parody of the Mexican telenovela. Not only is the comedy set in Mexico, but performed almost entirely in Spanish. Name one other A-lister who would dare commit to such an audience-limiting undertaking, foreign language and all. For a star of his stature to spoof something his fan base likely knows nothing about is so ballsy, it bounces.

The Girl from the Naked Eye

I spy something pulpy.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Presented as a story in the nonexistent Dark Mystery pulp mag, The Girl from the Naked Eye respectively refers to a call girl and the club where she worked.

Girls Gone Dead

T&A that earns a D.

Comedy

Rod Lott
I'm torn between whether the horror comedy Girls Gone Dead is misogynist or merely plays pretend. That it’s written by a woman boggles the mind.
